Synopsis
Rome, 1867, just before the defeat of Garibaldi. The Serristori barracks are blown up causing 23 deaths and three young revolutionaries are arrested. The natural mother of one, a countess, appeals to a high-up Monsignor to help her son. The prelate, discovering that the boy is his son, manages to obtain his release and hides him in his cellar. However, the countess’s husband, having heard alleged rumours of his wife’s affair with the boy, mortally wounds him in order to avenge his honour. The prelate, meanwhile, having met with the fury of the “Black Pope”, is arrested.
