Synopsis

Irene (Virna Lisi), a mature woman who remains young at heart, lives in the old family house which is filled with memories of her past. Her greatest regret is that she has not succeeded in passing on to her three children her fondness for the house and the “family” feeling that the place embodies.
But the family home is not the only thing her three children reject.
Sara (Margherita Buy), the eldest daughter, has been living in complete emotional isolation ever since her husband died. She spends the evenings waiting for her son Marco (Francesco Scianna) to come home, in constant fear that something awful has happened to him.
Rita (Sandra Ceccarelli), the other daughter, seems at least from the outside to lead a more fulfilled life: she lives in a nice house, has a husband Carlo (Marco Baliani) whom she married for love, and two daughters, Silvia (Francesca Perini) and Chiara (Maria Luisa De Crescenzo). But behind the facade lies discontent so deep that since the birth of her youngest daughter she has been unable to have sexual relations with her husband. But now a charming vet, Davide (Jean-Hugues Anglade), has walked into her life.
The baby of the family, Claudio (Luigi Lo Cascio), is a young lawyer who conceals and is frustrated by his homosexuality.
Such a maelstrom of discontent and repressed desire generates tensions that inevitably weigh upon the siblings. With varying degrees of awareness, they watch as their parents are swept up by an emotional earthquake.
The dragging monotony is suddenly dissipated by a number of events: the appearance of a mysterious man, Sandro (Ricky Tognazzi), shakes up Sara’s uneventful life, followed by the arrival of Luca (Marco Quaglia), a young man who forces Claudio to choose his path and declare his homosexuality.
