Synopsis

1619, Duchy of Mantua.
The Company of Fedeli Comedians works at the Gonzaga Court, having taken up their residence at Sabbioneta, a miniature Mantua built for the summer amusement of the Court.
The head Fedeli comedian is Giovanni Andreini and the prima donna is his wife, the grand Virginia Ramponi. Their fame is at its very height when they are invited by the king of France, Louis XIII, to play for a year at the Hotel de Bourgogne, which twenty years later will be the Molière theatre.
Virginia is famous all over Europe for her art and her beauty. Hers is the cult of perfection and she cannot bear that during recent months a young actress has been taken on by the Fedeli company, Lidia, who with her sweetness has won Giovanni Andreini.
When the preparations for the departure for France are at their height, Andreini starts writing a new comedy and, for the first time, decides to stage the happenings that are troubling his life, projecting his most intimate and unmentionable desires.
Virginia’s character is haughty and contemptuous, she rejects men because she is in love with herself; she takes pleasure in adoring herself in the mirror, her reflected image moves her and induces her to tell herself the most ardent words, capable of satisfying any carnal desire.
Great unrest spreads through the company. To calm the conflict between the two women, flaming with jealousy, Giovanni uses comedy and makes an ambiguous friendship be born between the two rivals.
Virginia immediately catches on to her husband’s double-cross: on stage and in real life she decides to seduce Lidia. This is a hard blow for Giovanni, the mechanism of manipulating sentiments has slipped from his grasp. Passions, independent of their origins, have a power and vitality that is completely ungovernable.
The king of France, who has seen the play, enraptured by the expertise of the representation and by the dramatic force of the text, is impatient to know the ending.
But Lidia and Virginia, now lovers, flee.
The company will be reunited again only on the way home, at the Italian border.
Giovanni will succeed in writing the last act and, according to the rules of tragic-comedy, re-establish order, putting all the pawns back in their place.
Thus is born the play “Reflected Image of Love”. At first it was reality, life suggesting the narration (the narcissism of Virginia who loves to look at herself in the mirror), then it was life to overcome fiction (the two women become lovers only after acting out the love scene in the play). And the game continues up to the epilogue.
